finding your tyre size
The information on the sidewalls of your existing tyres is the first important step in selecting new tyres for your car. It looks something like 205/65 R16 95 V. Having this information will make the selection of your next set of tyres a lot quicker and easier.
WIDTH 205/65 R16 95 V
The width of the tyre.
ASPECT RATIO 205/65 R16 95 V
The Aspect ratio or profile is the height of the tyre form the rim to the tread area. It’s shown as a percentage of the tread width. In this case the “height” of the tyre is 65% of the width.
RADIAL 205/65 R16 95 V
R is for Radial and tells us the “construction type” of the tyre. It is less important these days as all car tyres are radial. Many years ago we had “bias ply” or “cross ply” constructions as well and they needed to be able to identify the different types of tyre since they could not be mixed on the same axle. If there is no 'R', the tyre is not a radial.
RIM DIAMETER 205/65 R16 95 V
This is the diameter of the rim that the tyre can be fitted to. Internationally rim sizes are still measured and quoted in inches.
LOAD RATING 205/65 R16 95 V
A type of shorthand or scale used to describe the load carrying capacity of each tyre is. See load rating table. The higher the number, the more load the tyre can carry at a higher pressure. See load rating index.
SPEED RATING 205/65 R16 95 V
The speed symbol indicates the maximum speed the tyre is capable of running. In the case of a V rated tyre its 240kph. While it may seem excessive having such high speed ratings on tyres in Australia these ratings come almost as a “by product” of more highly developed tyres. A higher speed rating generally improves the tyre's ability to withstand heat (eg. driving long distances in hot conditions). See the speed categories.

runflat Tyres
The Run Flat Tyre is a revolutionary new concept in the tyre industry. The main advantage of which is to be able to continue to work at pressures which would render an ordinary tyre unusable. The tyre utilises self supporting technology which means it is able to support the weight of the vehicle it has been specified for. This tyre is still able to function even when there is zero pressure in the tyre. It is essential when using a Run Flat tyre that it is operated in conjunction with a tyre pressure monitoring system. This will inform the driver if they have experienced any loss of pressure within the tyre itself. It also renders obsolete the need for a spare wheel. From the point of safety the Run Flat tyre is a major step forward and it is estimated that within 3 years 10% of the high performance sector of the tyre market with be utilising Run Flat technology. It is precisely this reason that means most of the major tyre manufacturers are now investing in Run Flat technology for the future.
What are Run-flat Tyres? They are specially designed tyres that enable you to continue driving when you have a punctured tyre on your vehicle.
What are the advantages of Run-flat Tyres? The driver is warned that they have a puncture via a Tyre Pressure Monitoring device installed on the vehicle. There is no longer the need for you to stop driving straight away and replace the wheel, as you are able to continue driving at a reduced speed on the tyre, even though it may be deflated.
Other advantages are:
- Reduced risk of accident as no sudden loss of tyre pressure.
- Eliminates the need to stop immediately in dangerous roadside locations such as motorways, on a bend or whilst in unpleasant surroundings.
- Important meetings or appointments can still be attended on time, as you haven't needed to stop and replace the punctured wheel.
- Increased customer safety for night driving or women driving alone.
- Weight saving benefit, as no spare wheel or vehicle jack is needed.

cooper
Cooper traces its roots back to Akron, Ohio when two brothers-in-law purchased the M & M Company in 1914 making tyre patches and repair kits. The owners then purchased the Giant Tire & Rubber Company to make "rebuilt" tyres and moved the business to Findlay, Ohio, in 1917.
Another investor named I.J. Cooper established The Cooper Corporation in 1919 on an adjacent property for manufacturing new tyres. These two companies merged with The Falls Rubber Company of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, in 1930 and formed The Master Tire & Rubber Company.
In 1946, the company name was changed to Cooper Tire & Rubber Company. In 1960 the company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Today, Cooper is the eighth largest tyre manufacturer in the world and is among the 350 largest companies in America.
