PIRELLI RUN FLAT TYRE RANGE

Will Shalders - Friday, May 21, 2010

Run Flat tyre technology may not have proliferated amongst all major car manufacturers as might have been expected when it was first being developed, but demand for increasingly interactive and intelligent tyres, capable of guaranteeing ultra high performance and enhanced safety, has been increasing for many years. Run Flats are suggested as original equipment for a variety of makes and models, including BMW and MINI, but also for other marques, and Pirelli continues to manufacture Run Flat versions of its tyres to make sure drivers have the option of the ultimate in Ultra High Performance.

DEVELOPING NEW AND EXCITING RUN FLAT VERSIONS

As active components within the automotive system, tyres are called upon to play a "preventative" role, removing the risk of danger associated with puncture but also maintaining comfort and performance. Whilst the debate continues about the pros and cons of Run Flat, Pirelli surges ahead by developing new and exciting Run Flat versions of its cutting edge tyre designs to ensure motorists have the Pirelli option and the highest possible standard that comes with it.

EVEN WEAR WITH A CONSISTENT FOOTPRINT AT ALL SPEEDS

The Pirelli P Zero Run Flat forms part of the P Zero collection, which is Pirelli's family of UHP products. The P Zero's sporting characteristics offer power and control when driving top of the range, sports and high powered cars and SUVs. An innovative tread pattern guarantees optimum performance and grip in wet and dry conditions throughout its lifetime, and special nano-composites in the compounds of the tread and the bead deliver a comfortable ride together with sports performance. The P Zero also features a dynamic asymmetric contour which ensures even wear with a consistent footprint at all speeds. P Zero Run Flat has been approved by BMW for the 7 Series in 18", 19", 20" and 21".

ENERGY EFFICIENCY, HIGH MILEAGE, LOWER ROAD NOISE and DECREASED POLLUTION

The Pirelli Eufori@ is a product of the revolutionary modular integrated robotised system (MIRS). As a result of the extreme flexibility of the MIRS, Pirelli's technicians have been able to integrate self supporting sidewalls perfectly into the Eufori@'s structure without compromising any aspect of performance. Contrary to other total mobility developments, the increase in Eufori@'s weight and therefore the stress it places on the suspension and chassis is minimal. Eufori@ has a symmetrical tread pattern, sub-divided in five longitudinal rings with phase and sequence optimised for the best acoustic comfort. Water dispersion is guaranteed by wide longitudinal channels and marked transversal grooves, whilst the full central area works for the maximum traction in the dry or when braking. The compact shoulder blocks improve lateral rigidity, with a notable advantage for dry handling.

'WITH OUR RANGE OF RUN FLATS THERE IS ALSO NO NEED TO COMPROMISE ON PERFORMANCE'

Dominic Sandivasci, managing director of Pirelli Tyre UK said that Run Flat tyres are important as they offer benefits both in terms of safety and convenience. "Runflats remove the need for drivers to put themselves in danger by changing tyres on the road-side, and it also allays the risk of being stranded on dark roads, or in poor weather conditions. With our range of Run Flats there is also no need to compromise on performance, so we are able to offer the best of both worlds" he said.

The necessity to manufacture tyres in a different way when they are Run Flat means that they are fundamentally different from traditional tyres. This is due to the addition of elastromeric reinforcement technology which enables the tyres to continue operating whilst at zero pressure, as the sidewalls are capable of supporting the lateral and transverse loads of the vehicle. Pirelli believes that the implementation of this technology need not compromise performance.

INNOVATE TO MEET THE CUTTING EDGE OF SAFETY STANDARDS

Pirelli states: "The flexure dynamics and the generation of heat by the sidewalls have been a central focus for Pirelli research as we innovate to meet the cutting edge of safety standards when running at reduced pressure both in a straight line and through corners. The study of tyre behaviour in diverse situations has also allowed the entire structure of the carcass to be revised to maintain the levels of performance, comfort and reliability that distinguish our products in the high performance segment. Our Ultra High Performance tyres are available in Run Flat versions too which offers all the benefits alongside the best performance, although our Run Flat tyres may only be fitted to vehicles specifically manufactured to accommodate them."
