What is Seal Inside?

Seal Inside (S.I.) is a new tyre construction technology that allows you to drive on without losing air pressure even after the tyre has been punctured by an external object, covering almost 85% of the possible accidental causes of pressure loss*.

The Seal Inside logo will be used to identify all Pirelli products featuring this new technology.
The logo (in black) is also on the tyre sidewall.

* The Seal Inside is effective for the majority of the punctures apart from the ones that are compromising the integrity of the tyre

How does it work?

Inside the tyre, in the area corresponding to the tread pattern, a sealing layer material tightly blocks every possible air leakage in case of a puncture that passes through the carcass with or without an external object still present.

The Seal Inside deals immediately with the hole and its fast and effective action, in most cases, does not make the driver realize that the tyre has been punctured.

In the event of a puncture, the sealant allows the driver to continue
driving – not having to stop the vehicle for an immediate replacement of
the tyre – until it can be replaced.
The sealant does not guarantee
permanent repair of the tyre caused by a puncture. For this reason
Pirelli recommends that drivers regularly monitor the tyres in order to
identify punctures that are sealed, or the presence of nails or screws
on the tread pattern. In such a situation, it is necessary to go to a
specialized tyre dealer who can identify the puncture area and remove
the object that caused it.
The tyre dealer has to subsequently evaluate the extent of the damage and decide if the tyre can be repaired or not.
Seal Inside tyres can significantly reduce the chance of having a flat
tyre but, unlike run flat tyres, are not designed to be driven under
inflated or in a flat condition.
In terms of mounting, removing and
balancing there are no differences between Seal Inside and standard
tyres. Pirelli tyres with Seal Inside technology do not need dedicated
rims and for this reason can be mounted on the same standard rims used
for standard tyres.
Seal Inside tyres should be stored in the same conditions recommended for standard tyres.

This will see Greenfleet plant a native tree for every Ecowing tyre sold in Australia on behalf of Kumho Tyres in an effort to reduce carbon emissions.

Kumho and Greenfleet launched their promotion with a tree planting in Melbourne by Kumho Managing Director Mr. Ki Young Kim, Kumho brand ambassador Grant Hackett and Greenfleet CEO Sara Gipton.

The Ecowing range has proven to be environmentally due to its fuel saving properties, low rolling resistance and use of an environmentally friendly compound rather than a petroleum based one.

According to Mr. Kim, the relationship between Kumho and Greenfleet is yet another demonstration of Kumho’s ongoing commitment to the environment.

“Kumho aims to be socially responsible and as part of that we aim to limit the impact we have on the environment. By teaming up with Greenfleet, Kumho is giving something back to the environment and offsetting the impact tyres have on it,” said Mr. Kim.

“We are very excited to form this affiliation with Greenfleet because it gives consumers the power to help the environment at the point of sale simply by choosing Kumho. It’s as simple as that- buy Ecowing tyres and Kumho and Greenfleet will take care of the rest.”

Greenfleet has planted over 7.5 million native trees around Australia since 1997 in their aim to avoid, reduce and offset carbon emissions.

According to Greenfleet CEO Sara Gipton, Kumho’s involvement with the organisation will benefit the work of Greenfleet in both awareness and offsetting emissions.

“Greenfleet’s aim is to create a low carbon future for Australia. We hope this promotion will increase consumer awareness of climate change and show that easy choices made by people collectively make a difference. It’s not just about offsetting, it’s also about what you buy and how you use it every day,” Ms Gipton said.

“Kumho’s promotion will also introduce many Australians to Greenfleet’s work to help people reduce their environmental footprint, highlight the benefits of planting native forests and encourage people to donate Greenfleet to make an even bigger difference.”

Greenfleet will plant at least 5,000 native trees thanks to Kumho – assisting in: tackling climate change by recapturing carbon pollution from the atmosphere, providing habitat for wildlife, improving soil and water quality and increasing our unique landscape’s resilience to the effects of a changing climate.

“We actually aim to fund the planting of over 30,000 trees by the end of 2013” said Mr Kim.

“This promotion reinforces the old adage that every little bit counts and buying low resistance tyres does reduce average fuel consumption. We applaud Kumho for taking the initiative to raise awareness that everyday choices can make a difference and that people don’t have to compromise on quality. Of course we also welcome that it is helping revegetate Australia’s precious native forests with Greenfleet,” Ms Gipton affirmed.

Since its inception in 1960, Kumho Tyres has been a model of steady growth amid dramatic changes of business landscape. Driven by innovation in management and technical development Kumho has become one of the top ten tyre companies in the world.

Over the past half-century Kumho Tyres has built the foundation for a sustainable company, which has thrived through a full range of business environments.

Kumho has succeeded in the development of superior tyres for all vehicles including high performance, passenger, sports utility and recreational vehicles, as well as light trucks, heavy truck and buses, industrial, agricultural, mining and construction vehicles as well as aircraft.

Kumho produces more than 66 million tyres annually with a massive research and development program which comprises more than 500 research personnel and 300 testing machines at proving grounds in South Korea, China, Europe and North America. Kumho leads the world with the latest in tyre technology, safety and performance.

In Australia Kumho markets an extensive range of tyres for cars, 4WDs, light commercials, trucks and buses with a network centred around five state locations with the ability to distribute tyres to retailers across all areas of Australia.
With the silly season approaching, don't be silly by spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars on tyres without having a wheel alignment carried out. It is one of the most important things that you can do to ensure that your tyres last as long as possible.

During a wheel alignment the technician adjusts the camber, caster and toe of your vehicle to ensure that the tyres wear evenly and that your vehicle will track straight down the road. Vehicles that are out of alignment can wear tyres out in as little as 3,000kms rather than the average 30,000 - 50,000kms (average based on passenger tyres). Whilst carrying out the wheel alignment, the team at Action Tyres & More check over all of your tyres and suspension which will ease your mind if you are planning on doing a lot of travelling over the Christmas period. Wheel alignments should be routinely carried out along with tyre rotations to ensure that you get the most out of your tyres.

Another important thing to monitor regularly is your tyre pressure. It is a little known fact that you should check your tyre pressure every three weeks. This can be done for free at your local petrol station or from Action Tyres & More if you have purchased your tyres from them. Just drive in and the friendly team will whiz around and adjust your pressures in minutes.

Mention this article and Action Tyres & More will carry out a front and rear wheel alignment for $50 (normally $75).

Valid until the 31/12/11.

Tyres are a vehicle's only contact with the road.

You've probably heard many times about the importance of checking tyre pressures and replacing worn tyres. Unfortunately, too many motorists are complacent - or careless - about the condition of the four pieces of rubber that keep a car safely on the road.

For race drivers, worn tyres or the wrong choice of tyre means the difference between winning and losing, and staying on the track or running out of control and off it.

Motor racing is a good way to illustrate the importance of tyres.

During a race, you'll notice that race cars go through many tyre changes to maintain optimum performance and low lap times.

You will have noticed that race teams change the tyres on the cars according to the prevailing weather conditions.

In dry weather, 'slicks' are used. Slick tyres have no tread, giving the tyres maximum surface area in contact with the road to grip most effectively on a dry road surface. However, slicks are useless on a wet track because without grooves to clear the water away from beneath the tyre, the tyre loses contact with the surface of the road and loses grip. A 'slick' on a wet surface will quickly and unexpectedly slide without any means of controlling it. Race drivers refer to this as 'aquaplaning'. It is a real danger for even the most skilled of drivers.

When the track is wet, racing 'slicks' are replaced by race teams with wet weather tyres that have plenty of tread - the tread disperses water from underneath the tyres to prevent aquaplaning and to maintain tyre contact with the road.

Of course, having different sets of tyres for various road conditions is impractical for normal road use. That's why conventional tyres for road use are designed with tread patterns that maintain optimum grip in both wet and dry conditions.

Road tyres must have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm to be roadworthy. Driving on anything less is extremely dangerous in wet weather; low tread depth cannot disperse the water quickly enough allowing water build-up between the tyre and the road surface. When this occurs the car loses grip with the surface of the road and may easily and unexpectedly slide. Loss of grip from poor performing tyres is most dangerous in an emergency situation when a car needs to stop quickly, or change direction quickly.

Then, worn tyres can kill.

Tyres are a relatively low cost safety feature. Given that the life expectancy of a well-maintained tyre is up to 60,000km, the running cost can be a little as one cent per kilometre.

So there goes your excuse for not being able to afford new tyres. Realistically, if you can't afford to replace worn tyres on your vehicle, you really can't afford to be driving at all.

When fitting new tyres to your vehicle, ask to have the wheels checked for balance and alignment. It's false economy if you don't. When wheels are out of alignment or balance, the tyres will wear unevenly and have a shorter life.

Check tyre pressures regularly. Under-inflated tyres will also lead to uneven tread wear, not to mention playing havoc with fuel economy.

Checking tyre pressures is also a good opportunity to keep an eye on the tyre tread. When the tread wears down, you'll notice that small bars will start to appear across the tread, evenly spaced around the circumference of the tyre. These are called tread wear indicators, and when they become clearly visible, it's time to replace your tyres.

The museum founded in 1830, attracts approximately 1.5 million visitors a year via its programs and interactive exhibits.

This is a huge step forward for the Yokohama brand and highlights its efforts in producing products which are eco friendly.

The technology combines oil extracted from orange peels with fine silica and a blend polymer to form an 80% non-petroleum based nano-compound. This compound is then used to manufacture tyres which conserve fuel by reducing rolling resistance by up to 20%.

"Yokohama is the first - and only- tyre manufacturer in the world to employ orange oil technology," said Yasushi Tanaka, Yokohama president and CEO. "It's very rewarding to see it highlighted in a leading educational and cultural institution like the Museum of Science, Boston. The exhibit validates our commitment to advanced technologies that will protect earth."

"Yokohama's display is especially timely because it shows an innovative, green approach to manufacturing", said Paul Fontaine, the Museum's vice president of Education.

It suits drivers who
want to replace their car’s factory fitted tyres with something one step
better. After fitting a set of C.drive2 tyres you can expect low tyre
noise, a safe steering feel and lots of grip on wet roads; especially
during a downpour. It’s also environmentally friendly.

Yokohama
put 175 retailers from across Australia in the driver’s seat to compare
the Yokohama C drive2 tyre with factory fitted original equipment (OEM)
tyres. Yokohama chose two of Australia’s biggest selling cars for
their drive day demonstration, the Toyota Camry and Hyundai i30.
Australian car buyers are shifting towards small and mid-size front
wheel drive cars like the Camry and i30 as opposed to the large rear
wheel drive such as Holden Commodore.

Retailers
from Bob Jane T-Marts and Tyres & More who participated in the tyre
test made some interesting observations. They noticed the safety
warning chime from the car’s Electronic Stability Program (ESP) cut in
regularly while trying to keep up with the C.drive2 car on the wet skid
pan. The ESP rarely cut in with the C.drive2 demonstrating the extra
margin of safety the tyre provides.

The tyre
retailers also had the opportunity to test the standard tyre against a
plus-fitment with the C.drive2 on a long and challenging dry road
circuit. All the drivers were bowled over by the difference. The effect
of upgrading to 17 inch wheels and fitting C.drive2s is awesome they
said. The most common observation was that “the C.drive2 made the car
handle better, with less body roll”. By comparison they said the factory
fitted tyres “felt floaty” and getting the car around the course was “a
lot of hard work”.

Why does the C.drive2 tyre
perform so well? Firstly, the key to the tyre’s wet performance is the
wide tread grooves which act like big drains to remove water from under
the tyre. Secondly, and it’s a bit hard to explain, the Yokohama factory
puts a lot of effort into the quality of the beads, radial plys and
sidewall construction of the tyres which means there is a strong
connection between the wheel and the road which makes the car feel sharp
and responsive. This is common feedback in Yokohama tyre comparisons.

The
big secret is orange peel oil. Yokohama engineers discovered they can
replace some of the non-renewable mineral oil with renewable orange peel
oil. This adds to Yokohama’s environmental credentials. From a
technical angle the orange peel oil makes the rubber grip the road
better. This has been proven in the local Australian V8 Ute racing

Results were based on the scores awarded across a range of key areas including tyre balance, tyre noise, stopping distance, hill climbing ability, sand testing, swerve testing and a mud run.

The 4x4 Action Magazine had the following to say about the Pirelli Scorpion ATR "The Pirelli Scorpions were one of the most sure-footed tyres on the high-speed gravel swerve and hill climb legs of the test. The level of grip from the Scorpions allowed the Patrol to practically walk up the loose hill climb with very minimal wheel spin. Their traction on the downhill section of our test allowed us to bring the Patrol to a snail's pace whereas others simply slid down without grip".
This follows a pledge from The Yokohama Rubber Company Japan, announced yesterday, that it will donate 50 million Yen (Around $600,000 AUS) immediately to assist the relief efforts following the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake Disaster on 11th March 2011.

Yokohama Rubber Company Japan and Yokohama Tyre Australia would like to express their sympathy to the families who lost loved ones in the Earthquake and Tsunami. We hope the areas devastated will be reconstructed as soon as possible.

Thankfully there have been no casualties in any Yokohama factories. Immediately after the Earthquake all plants suspended operations. Some damage to buildings and equipment was observed at the Ibaraki Plant only. Production will resume at Mishima Plant, Hiratsuka Factory, Hiratsuka-Higashi Plant, Hamatite (Nakahara) Plant and Nagano Plant following safety checks and pending raw material and electricity supply. Shinshiro Plant, Mie Plant and Onomichi Plant will continue to operate as normal.

Yokohama store networks in Australia which include Bob Jane T-Marts, Tyres & More and Yokohama Preferred Independent dealers are concerned and want to help. Yokohama Tyre Australia has pledged to donate one dollar ($1.00 AUS) per tyre sold in March and April 2011 to the Japanese Red Cross Society. In this small way, we can show our support to the Japanese community most in need.

This has since been joined by several of the most popular BMW fitments from 195/55R16 to 245/40R18, which between them cover most of the requirements for the Mini, 1,3 and 5 Series BMW models.

Kumho's XRP tyres have reinforced sidewalls and a specially reinforced bead that will support the car's weight and ensure a secure fit on the wheel, even after complete loss of inflation pressure. Special materials also prevent heat from building up while driving when the tyre is deflated.

In order to allow sale of its replacement run-flat products throughout the world, Kumho built a high degree of tolerance into their technical specification from day one, as a result of which they have acquired an enviable reputation. The company is now moving towards second generation products that will guarantee ride comfort even closer to that of a conventional tyre, courtesy of refinements to the tread profile (as a result of Finite Element Analysis) and the use of lighter gauge sidewall inserts.

Despite the essential role it fulfills in the case of an emergency, a spare tyre has a number of disadvantages both for vehicle manufacturers and consumers. Not many motorists realise that carrying a spare tyre actually requires vehicle manufacturers to re-consider the design of the car to take account of its weight and size.

As well as distorting the car's design, a spare tyre is effectively 'dead weight' in the boot which seriously impacts the aerodynamics and fuel efficiency of the vehicle - which is a problem for manufacturers and motorists alike.

Solving The Issues Associated With The Spare Tyre

For consumers, a spare tyre also represents a loss of space and inconvenience at the roadside. But what are the alternatives when you suffer a flat tyre? Many tyre manufacturers believe that Run Flat Technology (RFT) could be the solution, solving the issues associated with the spare tyre without compromising on safety.

Currently there are several alternatives to a full size spare on the market. A 'temporary spare', a smaller version of a standard spare tyre, reduces weight load and increases boot capacity, but the current issues around re-designs and problems changing and fitting the tyre following a flat remain.

A second alternative would be to place 'tyre repair kits' in the boot rather than a tyre. This resolves the weight and capacity issues and does not involve removing the tyre at the roadside but brings with it its own problems - one of the key issues being a lack of awaremess of its installation and then how to use it.

Many tyre manufacturers believe that Run Flat Technology answer all of these issues and bring their own additional safety and environmental benefits. Run flats are designed in close collaboration with vehicle manufacturers to ensure they offer the highest performance and a ride comparable to that of a standard tyre.

BENEFIT THAT COMES WITH HAVING RUN FLATS FITTED

Andy Lane, marketing manager at Bridgestone UK, comments: "Run Flat Technology will no longer be the preserve of the most expensive car models and cost and distribution will meet everyone's requirements and expectations."

An additional benefit that comes with having run flats fitted is that it comes with a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), which alerts the driver if there is any loss of pressure in the tyres.

Andy Lane continues: "For a driver, checking your tyres, and in particular their pressures, is vital to ensure you remain safe on the road. However, this check is often overlooked, putting your safety and that of other road users at risk."

"Tyre pressure monitoring systems are fitted as standard in vehicles which run on RFT tyres, but we feel this technology should be fitted to all vehicles as a key safety feature, as is the law in the US"."

Pirelli'sindex score was 742 in the study, 38 points above the segment average of 704, an improvement over the 2009 result.

The study which is based on consumer-reported satisfaction with OE tyres, measures Pirelli's overall consumer satisfaction rates in one of the company's most popular, and storied product segments - high and ultra-high performance tyres.

The 2010 Original Equipment Tyre Customer Satisfaction Study is based on responses from nearly 30,000 new-vehicle owners who purchased a 2008 or 2009 model vehicle. The study was fielded between October and December 2009.

"A combination of technological features eliminates the previously unavoidable compromises associated with sporty driving: performance and comfort, acceleration and braking, on both road and track, and handling in wet and dry conditions," said Tom Gravalos, Pirelli vice-president. "Pirelli is committed to delivering uncompromised performance while reducing impact on the environment," he added.
